Press Pause!

Lilian Nicolaas | Executive Solo Retreat

Self-aware executives know when they need to press pause. They often ignore that gut knowledge because of (a) pressure to work 24/7 because of heightened demands and expectations, (b) fear of missing out on important developments if they were to be absent, and finally (c) guilt that they might be perceived as being self-indulgent or plain selfish. Rationally all great leaders realize that, especially in difficult times, an intentional break is needed if you want to maintain calm, methodical, and inspired decision making. So based on the needs of what my clients termed "an extended coaching session" I created the Press Pause Package. A combination of executive coaching sessions and an executive solo retreat.

What is an executive solo retreat?

An executive solo retreat is a type of retreat that is designed for an individual executive who wishes to take time away from their work and daily routines to focus on personal development and reflection. Unlike a traditional executive retreat, which involves a group of executives, a solo executive retreat is designed for one person only.

The purpose of a solo executive retreat is to provide executives with an opportunity to reflect on their personal and professional goals, recharge their energy, and gain new insights and perspectives. The retreat is often customized to meet the individual needs and interests of the executive, and may include a range of activities such as meditation, yoga, journaling, hiking, or creative workshops. Typically, the executive will choose to work with a coach, mentor, or therapist to guide them through the retreat and help them achieve their goals.

The benefits of a solo executive retreat include the opportunity to disconnect from work and technology, reduce stress, gain clarity on personal and professional goals, and develop new skills and insights. It can also provide executives with a sense of renewal and inspiration, which can help them return to work with greater focus and energy.

Why not a vacation?

While both solo executive retreats and vacations can involve travel, time away from work, and leisure activities, the key difference lies in their purpose and focus. The executive solo retreat is focused on professional development combined with energy renewal , while a vacation is focused solely on rest and recreation. So while a vacation may leave the executive feeling rested in the moment, the executive solo retreat will equip him to better navigate change and uncertainty.

The Press Pause Package

With the Press Pause Package I created an executive solo retreat that incorporates the benefits of peer connection. Within a group of maximum seven (7) participants you get to retreat in order to focus on personal development, recharge and reinvigorate yourself but you also get the benefits of connecting with peers.

Given the current economic climate, the benefits this Press Pause Package offers are:

  1. Time for reflection Change can be disruptive and challenging for executives, and it can be difficult to find time for reflection and introspection in the midst of a busy work schedule. The Pause Package provides you with dedicated time to reflect on your personal and professional goals, values, and priorities, and gain clarity on your vision for the future.

  2. Opportunity to decompress Change can be draining, and you may experience burnout or fatigue as you navigate new challenges and responsibilities. The Pause Package provides an opportunity for rest and renewal, allowing you to recharge your energy and return to work with greater focus and resilience. It's an opportunity to step up on self-care, to prioritize your physical, emotional, and mental health and well-being.

  3. Creative Thinking Change often requires new approaches and innovative solutions. The Pause Package provides you with a safe space to unburden yourself and gain the mental freedom to think creatively and generate new ideas and strategies that can help you navigate change more effectively.

So, although it may be counter-intuitive, I urge you to take this pause. Communicate the benefits of the retreat to your board, set clear boundaries and expectations for your time away, and ensure that you have a plan in place to address any urgent matters that may arise during your absence. During our pre-retreat sessions I can support you with this and with any underlying fears or concerns. Ultimately, by prioritizing your own personal development and self-care, you can become a more effective leader, better equipped to navigate change and uncertainty.

See you in Porto, Portugal...
